West Coast Giant Pumpkins Regatta
Just in case you were wondering if Oregon really can be as weird as it touts, be sure to check out the West Coast Giant Pumpkin Regatta. This cherished local event returns Oct. 21, 2017, to the Tualatin Commons. This annual October series of races is exactly what it sounds like, consisting of paddlers piloting a gaggle of ginormous gourds through a water course on Tualatin Commons lake. The event kicks off with a giant pumpkin parade and weigh-off, followed by a full day of costumed contestants plying the shallow lake in 1,000-pound pumpkin boats.
Squishing of the Squash
Who wouldn’t want to see some of the world’s largest animals demolish some of the regions biggest pumpkins? Well, now you can! The event will be held Friday, Oct. 27, at 11 a.m. The Squishing of the Squash is a precursor to the zoo’s Howloween celebration taking place the following week. Events on Saturday and Sunday, October 28 – 29, include a fun scavenger hunt that directs trick-or-treaters to easily accessible activity stations throughout the zoo where they can collect candy and prizes and learn about wildlife. Throughout the weekend, visitors can also watch the zoo’s enrichment team and keepers provide animals with pumpkins and other holiday-themed treats.
