What To Do Outside Portland

Ski Bowl

Looking for some outdoor winter activities for the whole family? While we’ve covered Skiing in Oregon previously, there’s also ways to hit the snow even if you have never been skiing before! The Snow Tube and Adventure Park at Skibowl East is fun for all ages. Skibowl offers the only tube conveyor lift on Mt. Hood!

The fun begins as you ride up our specially designed conveyor lift to the top of the main hill. It’s then a heart pounding ride to the bottom in our custom tubes. The Snow Tube and Adventure Park is open weekends and school holiday periods during the winter.

Wine Tours

The Willamette Valley, Oregon’s leading wine region, is just a short drive outside Portland and has two-thirds of the state’s wineries and vineyards. It is home to more than 500 wineries and  is recognized as one of the premier Pinot noir producing areas in the world.

Buffered from Pacific storms on the west by the Coast Range, the valley follows the Willamette River north to south for more than a hundred miles from the Columbia River near Portland to just south of Eugene. To the east, the Cascade Range draws the boundary between the Willamette Valley’s misty, cool climate and the drier, more extreme climate of eastern Oregon.

The Willamette Valley wineries are a popular tourist destination for wine lovers. The valley also offers a long list of fine dining restaurants. An additional advantage for the wine tourist is the proximity of the wineries to Portland. From Portland, tourists can visit the Willamette Valley winery of their choice in anywhere from 45 minutes to two hours.

Breweries

If wine is not your cup of tea, then head out to some of the Breweries in the area. Along the banks of the great, wide Columbia River, no traveler should miss the soaring cliffs, the dramatic waterfall hikes — or the growing number of hardworking brewers making some of the tastiest trail-ending beers imaginable. Grab your favorite designated driver and take in the outstanding beauty of the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area, enjoying access along the way to five outstanding brewpubs — all within 60 breathtaking miles (97 km) of Portland.

World of Speed

Are you a fan of racing or just the history of fast cars? Then you have to check out the World of Speed Museum in Willsonville. Just 20 minutes by car from downtown Portland, the museum honors many forms of motor sports, including drag, road, land speed, motorcycle, NASCAR, and open wheel racing. World of Speed offers a comprehensive look at motorsports history for gearheads and newbies alike. It’s a nostalgic trip through American automotive ingenuity. From the cars that sped down Indianapolis Motor Speedway® to that beautiful white-and-orange Camaro that set the pace, this museum is a thrill for everyone who has ever felt the need for speed.
