With the abundance of craft breweries, unique food options, and one of a kind events, Portland has started appearing on the map as a popular destination city. With more tourism, finding cheap places to stay in Portland has become difficult. If you are planning your next trip to Portland and are afraid that you’ll need to spend a fortune on lodging, we’ve found a few recommendations to check out that will not break the bank and still be top quality.

Hostels in Portland, Oregon

Hostels can be a great option if you are looking for a cheaper alternative. Two hostels in the Portland metro area that we would recommend are:

HI Portland Hawthorne Hostel

Located in one of Portland, Oregon’s most popular district for food, art, and shopping, the Hawthorn Hostel offers dorm room style lodging and private rooms. The dorm rooms range anywhere from $35 – $49, while the private rooms start at $69 and can go up to $77.

Travelers’ House Hostel

Portland’s Travelers’ House Hostel is located on the west side of the city close to the Pearl District and Nob Hill. This area is a great location for shopping or visiting Powell’s City of Books. Rates for a private queen room range anywhere from $75 – $95. The 3-8 bed dorm rooms range anywhere from  $33 – $45.

Hostels can be a great way to save money and can offer great community spaces to meet other travelers. But if you are traveling with your family, for business, or wanting your own private bathroom, hostels may not be the best option.

Cheap Airbnbs in the NE Portland Area

Airbnb has become a popular alternative for lodging while traveling. With so many different types of apartments, houses, or private rooms, Airbnb is able to offer lodging that appeals to everyone and a wide range of rates.

Here are just a couple Airbnb’s that are highly rated near the Portland’s International Airport:

Quiet Boho-Modern Studio: Concordia/Alberta Arts

If you are planning on exploring the Northeast side of Portland, chances are you will end up on Alberta Street, where local made art, unique restaurants, and local coffee shops flourish. This Airbnb is located in the Alberta Arts District and pricing starts at $65 a night, but has a cleaning fee of $45, a service fee that starts at $15, and a $23 fee for occupancy taxes.

 – True Portlandia: Tiny house

For a truly unique and fun experience, Portland has become a common place for tiny house hotels and rentals. This Airbnb can fit up to 4 guests with 2 bedrooms and 1 bath in its 300 sq foot design. Modern, clean, and elegant, this Airbnb is listed as $49 a night, but has a $60 cleaning fee, a service fee starting at $17, and a $27 fee for occupancy taxes.

Airbnb’s are great for travelers who are looking to see what it is like to live among the locals or for travelers looking for a very unique place to stay. For travelers who are on a budget, the fees that come with renting an Airbnb may make this option too expensive.
